Your Red Hat is not just a logo or a color scheme; it’s the core of what makes you, you. It’s about identifying the blend of skills, values, personality, and passion that sets you apart.
In the Fall of 2021, I was speaking at a conference called Podfest Origins at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. In an effort to be perceived as “young” and “hip” and “cool”, I had bought and was wearing a SUPREME hat.
So, I gave my talk while sporting my SUPREME ball cap and everything went extremely well. But, when I got off stage, a good friend of mine, Alex Sanfilippo, who owns an amazing podcast guesting platform called Podmatch walked up and asked me a life changing question:
“Hey bro, great talk, but why are you wearing the Supreme hat?“
Alex acknowledged my strategy, but countered by asking if they were sponsoring me.
I quickly responded by letting him know that there was absolutely no way that this company would ever sponsor a middle aged dude to rep their brand. To which he simply asked, “Then why are you wearing it on stage?”
This feedback resonated with me so much that when I got back home, I immediately tossed this high dollar, branded hat to the side, then went online and picked up an unbranded $6, red, flat bill hat. Once it arrived, I slapped it on my head, turned it 15 degrees to the right and BAM! The Red Hat was born.
Within weeks, I started hearing from people calling me “The Red Hat Guy” and not only did they recognize me as the Red Hat Guy, they recognized me as the podcast consultant guy. They recognized me as someone who stood out in a crowded marketplace.
